Jnanpith Award is a literary award given to Indian writers every year for their literary works in Indian languages and English. It is presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith organisation. Jnanpith Award was instituted in 1961. The winner is given a cash prize of Rs. 11 lakh and a bronze replica of Goddess Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of learning.After 1982, the Jnanpith honour has been given for lifetime contribution to Indian literature. Prior to 1982, the Jnanpith Award was given only for a single piece of work. It is the highest literary award of the country. The first Jnanpith award was given in 1965 to G Shankara Kurup. His work was in Malayalam language. ‘Odakkuzhal’ (The Bamboo Flute) was the name of the novel which won him the first Jnanpith Award. Ashapoorna Devi was the first woman writer to be given the Jnanpith Award. She was the recipient of this award in 1976.
